Winter 2019 - TAS. 5 Hobart, Tasmania

TAS. 5   Hobart, Tasmania
We ate the left over hot-cross buns for breakfast this morning in Richmond’s Caravan Park so when we arrived in Hobart around lunch time we were hungry.
Reception at the Salamanca Inn

In Hobart we occupied the Salamanca Inn, a spiffy place with a perfect location, immediately opposite the St. David’s Park. (By the way… this blog “St. David’s-Park” by Geoff Ritchie has an assortment of descriptive historic blogs in it, if you are interested in the history of the convict trails in Australia… great blog - thank you, Geoff.)
Huge Room Included a Kitchen and Dining Table For 4.
We had a nice King Suite at the Salamanca with a funky red sofa and chair situated so we would be overlooking the park. Breakfast was very good and extensive.

I like cities. It is Friday, we came here a day ahead of the flea-market that is just down the street from our location tomorrow. It’s a famous ‘flea’, so we wanted a day of look-and-see before the hoopla tomorrow and also wanted to explore the area around the docks, since we are so close to it.
Scenes at the Harbour

After we checked into the Hotel we moseyed down to the wharf and we shared a fish salad just to tide us over until tonight’s dinner.

We wanted to eat out tonight in style, there are so many eateries, so many tables that we had picked out a special place for tonight already.
Old Buildings Made of Stone
But it’s too early, so we walked about and tried to find Elisabeth Street with, what is known in Hobart, a fantastic shopping mall. Hmmm, somehow we found the street, found some shops but 'fantastic' was not what we saw.

OK, back to the wharf, we went in and out of the pier shops and found a stand that sold tickets for MONA (The Museum of Old and New Art). We are going there tomorrow and I will write about that ‘tomorrow’, we just bought the tickets since this MONA place can be sold out in no time. So remember if you come here, buy the tickets for MONA a day ahead.
Resting After All the Walking

Since walking around gave us the lay of the land, we went back to the hotel after our day’s jaunt but then at about 6.45 PM we were ready for ‘food’!!!!

The place we had scouted out was sold out, no tables available. Bummer!

We walked to the 2nd, A- rated place but they too were sold out, no room in the Inn.
How Many Fish Do You See? + 2 Seahorses, + 2 Crabs, + ?

Wow, what is going on here… this harbor area, these restaurants are totally SOLD OUT on a Friday night. Who knew!
You Could Take a Tour With the Owner But Not Allowed to Drive It
I get cranky when I am hungry so now what do we do?
Side Streets, there has to be a place that serves food for just walk-in customers.
We really had to walk a lot; really scoured the backstreets but we found a place.
Persian Food! Prices were through the roof. Carol and I settled down to a kind of appetizer of Eggplant and Grilled Cauliflower. Not sure what it was called but when I am hungry as I was, anything is good. We did not eat the dessert at this Persian (read Iran) place; it would have broken the bank. The prices were really exorbitant.
Another Way to See Hobart
Almost next door to Persia was an ice-cream store with a bakery attached; we went there for our sweet-tooth attack. Apple crumble, clotted cream and ice cream… yummy!
When we walked back to the Hotel a band was playing in St. David’s park.
So instead of telling you we did nothing for the day, I just gave you a rundown of what 'nothing' is to us.
St. David's Park

See you tomorrow.
