TAS. 3
Various Stops
Our View of the Prison From Our Room |
We
slept in a historic Hotel last night. The P.A. Motor Inn in Port Arthur overlooks
the whole Museum of the old Penal Colony property and we found the place
because it was suggested to us by a woman in the info booth. It’s an old place,
not really up to the latest but it was an unusual experience and it came with a
good breakfast. Price was a bit exorbitant for what it was but then how often
do I come here, right?
I
drove our car back the way we came; there are not really that many roads to
drive on in TAS, especially in the countryside, outside of Hobart.
We
had passed the Unzoo again when we left and now we are looking for what else is
on the way.
Most of the Lavender Had Finished Blossoming But Still Fragrant |
We
found:
A few Lavender fields but mostly
it was a store selling Lavender products, including some cookies made with
lavender in them and while nice, it was not the huge farm of Lavender in the
Northern end of TAS. We just had breakfast at the Hotel so we were not hungry
but the place had a rather large room serving foods, too.
Mail Boxes More Interesting Than the Chocolate Factory |
While
advertised as "outstanding", we were not so impressed. Could be that it was too
early in the day to get the ‘munchies’.
Mail Boxes: made from old microwave ovens, or from whatever.
Road Kill: Lots of lots of road kill on the
road; we did not see the road kill last night coming in, but today? What happened last night?
Blowhole and Arch
The Blowhole on a Calm Day |
Blowhole and Arch
Near
each other but different, the Blowhole
is a hole in a wall where the ocean roars through with tremendous power. I can
imagine how it must sound in a storm or gale… we were lucky; it was a calm
day for the water to be pushed through this ‘eye of a needle' hole.
The Arch was just a piece of stone still hanging that has not dropped off yet. It will drop someday; just give the ocean, the winds, the rain some time. NO, you cannot walk across the top, it’s too dangerous.
A Food Wagon Selling Doo-lishus Seafood and Ice-cream |
Everything
is named "doo".
DOO Drop Inn - DOOlishious – Much aDOO - etc.
A
strange place to see, a harder place to find.
Doo da, Doo da!
It Was Fun to See All the Signs |
Tessellated Pavement Formed Naturally From the Action of the Salt Water on the Silt-Stone |
Different Sized Tessellated Pavement |
Tessellated Pavement:
Just
strange and a perfect example how little we know about how Mother Earth really
works. Here she shows us a 'pavement' au natural. It is totally natural; I stood upon it, saw
it, and wondered about it. Weird Earth!
Naturally,
Carol went inside to take some photos, I waited in the car. Yes, I missed the
inside of the church; Carol tells me I did miss wonderful stained glass art
work. The cemetery around the church had many old graves from the mid-1800s
with some with strange inscriptions.
Built
by convicts without mortar or cement, a bridge that serves no apparent purpose,
does not lead to anyplace, built to just keep prisoners busy; is my take on the
‘attraction’. Those gangs of laborers must have gone through hell while
building this stupid bridge. I did not think it funny, what a waste of energy
and mind.
Here
was a 'farm' that just grew all kinds of berries. Or so they said…
I
only saw a shop stuffed with jams, cookies, ice cream, etc. I wanted to buy some fresh berries but they
were out of them… Right!
Still
the place is ‘famous’.
We
bunked for the night at the Swansea Motor Inn, nothing to write home about.
Walked into town to eat but food was expensive. A 13“ pizza cost $30. - Yikes!
You
can charge anything if you are the only game in town.
