Cambodia 2020 - 2. Traveling to Siem Reap

2. Traveling to Siem Reap.

Our trip is booked from Feb 5 until March 4, 2020.

Everything is ready, all is in place, and our flight is on Cathay Pacific.
We have one stop over in Hong Kong with a layover of 3 hours, but otherwise it’s all set up. Yes, it will be a LONG flight.

Please notice the date of our departure… we are just at the beginning of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) outbreak. The first reports appeared at the end of Dec. 2019 and quickly gained speed. By January the news
reports are almost to the point of ‘panic’. Do we really want to travel to Asia?  It’s a serious consideration to just drop our choice of winter solace. We are sitting in Toronto, frozen in, but healthy. Do we want to expose ourselves to the new, unpredictable and unknown virus?  Our chances of not getting the virus are much better in Toronto, than traveling closer to China.

We watch the news reports; the news about the virus is not getting better. What should we do?
The Red Dot Is Hong Kong

You need to consider this, too.

Carol worked in health care all her life. It was her profession. When the famous SARS epidemic ran unchecked, Carol was part of the very first team to dig deeper into the virus, to learn how it spread, interacts, and how it can be treated or prevented. This occurred at a Canadian Government sanctioned hospital. It was a scary time in health care and patients, even doctors and nursing staff died during this period. Carol was part of this as a health care professional. She managed all the staff and had to establish unprecedented procedures and care protocols for the affected patients during the SARS outbreak. So you might say Carol was or is ‘jaded’ (Carol says ‘informed’) when it comes to infectious viruses. She also taught a course in infection control to nurses.

The new COVID-19 is a new form of SARS, and an adaptation of the SARS virus into a more advanced and dangerous species of viruses. Naturally, Carol was keenly aware of the infection levels and precautions needed for the new outbreak of an even more advanced virus, the COVID-19.

So do we go or don’t we go?

Are we just too dense to see the implications, the hazards?
The mind is a dangerous thing. We can talk ourselves into anything, it seems. Panic is a true danger to us all.

Well, we went… as you know already.
Did we do the right thing?   Well, the future will let us know!
If you see more blogs from me…. Then we did the right thing.
If not… this is the end!
